Corrosion Control – OVERVIEW
Corrosion Control is the result of a chemical or electro-chemical reaction that causes metal components in a system to degrade. Ferric Oxide (rust) is a common form of corrosion that is caused by the elector-chemical reaction that occurs when metal is exposed to oxygen and water. Another common type of corrosion is Galvanic corrosion which occurs when two dissimilar metals touching and in contact with the same liquid. This situation creates a differential in the electrical potential across the two metals. Because of the difference in electrical potential, the corrosion rate of one of the metals will increase, while the corrosion rate of the other metal will decrease. For this reason it is important to ensure that dissimilar metals are never in contact with eachother in a water system.
For Cooling Towers, Boilers, and Closed-loops, corrosion will lead to increased energy costs because of the reduction in heat transfer efficiency that occurs due to corrosion. Corrosion will also result in increased maintenance costs, and ultimately corrosion will cause systems to fail completely. Such failures are expensive due to the cost of replacement equipment, installation, and downtime during the replacement.
Corrosion Control – TREATMENT
- Corrosion Inhibitors (nitrite, molybdate, orthophosphate, etc.)
- Scavengers to remove oxygen
- Polymers to resist particulate accumulation
- Corrosion Coupons to monitor and control corrosion
Chemical treatment with a “cocktail” of additives is often the best way to control Corrosion in a cost effective way. Corrosion Inhibitors combined with Scavengers to remove oxygen and Polymers to prevent build-up will work together to provide a comprehensive barrier to Corrosion. Anti-foam agents are also added for steam boilers in order to prevent “carry-over” of contaminates into the steam flow. Corrosion Coupons are used to monitor corrosion rates and can also be used to control corrosion by acting as a “lightening rod” for electrical activity within a system.
Aqua Clear creates a custom-tailored solution for the specific situation that exists at each customer location. We use custom blended Chemicals that are are specifically designed to fight various types of corrosion in Cooling Towers, Boilers, and other HVAC systems. We will also install Corrosion Coupons, as needed, and in conjunction with the chemical treatment program. In short, we will use all of the tools at our disposal to ensure maximum protection against Corrosion and any other contaminates in order to maximize the useful life and minimize the maintenance required for your Cooling Towers, Boilers, and other HVAC components, such as chillers and water heaters.
